Margate

The brash, built-up holiday town of Margate, 2 km south of Uvongo, is the South Coast's undisputed tourism hub. Margate is kept in the loop, by daily direct SAA flights to Johannesburg and by busses to Gauteng and Durban.

Margate is as far as you'll get down the South Coast using public transport. With its high-rise apartments, fast-food outlets, and ice-cream parlors, Margate offers little in the way of undiscovered coves or hidden beaches. However, it's big plus point is the wide choice of good-value places to stay, especially out of season.

Five minutes south of Margate is the resort of Ramsgate, set on a beautiful tranquil Blue Lagoon offering protected bathing in tidal pools along secluded beaches.
