Bloemfontein

Situated roughly in the center of the country, most visitors will likely end up in Bloemfontein at some stage of their journey. If this is likely in your case it is advisable that you stay a few days to soak up the friendly atmosphere and visit the sights. Also known as the 'City of Roses', this capital of the Free State Province has a picturesque beauty that simply melts away stress and delights the eyes.

On one's first day spent in the city, you will likely feel a strong sense of culture. In a world where family values are fast being lost, Bloemfontein is a place where they are held in high esteem and one's quality of life is considered to be very important. Cultures are intermingled and a peaceful atmosphere presides in every corner of the city. The streets are kept clean and faces are friendly. Even the past seems to merge - rather than clash - with the present here. Instead of isolating older parts of the city, older buildings have been incorporated into the designs of a more modern and ever developing city.

Definitely worth a visit is the the very good Oliewenhuis Art Gallery, set in beautiful gardens, and in the unmistakably provincial President Brand Street, lined with handsome, sandstone public buildings and charming trees. All through the city you will find small monuments and memorials which are preserved in the midst of the city in order to remember the past so as to better live the present. Getting around the city center is relatively easy and can be done on foot. There are quite a few older buildings worth seeing here such as the City Hall, the Old Presidency, the Anglican Cathedral and the Dutch Reformed Twin Tower Church - all of which reflect early white South African culture. Attractions of a more lively nature include the Bloemfontein Zoo, the Orchid House, the Botanical Gardens or the Aventura Maselspoort which offers fun water activities if you are visiting on a hot day.

If you are visiting the country to see some of its fantastic wildlife, we recommend the Franklin Reserve on Naval Hill. Otherwise you will find a wealth of cultural activities at any of the city's many theatres, art galleries, museums or craft markets. If you prefer the shade of a roof over your head while you are shopping, the modern four-storied Mimosa Mall might be what you are looking for. You could also venture to Loch Logan to enjoy the busy waterfront. Bloemfontein can be accessed by air, road or train and has a variety of conveniently placed accommodation.
