Bars and Clubs in South Africa
The nightlife in South Africa can take many different and entertaining forms. Most are covered by the word 'Jol', derived from the fluid Cape dialect known as Gamtaal, which can refer to anything from a nice picnic to an all-night rave. Many South African 'Jollers' head out seven days a week in larger cities, while in country towns they restrain their night time activities mainly to weekends. However, regardless of how often they enjoy their chosen pleasures, they do so with a certain kind of dedication that is all-encompassing and cheerful.
South Africa’s largest cities – namely Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth – are home to a wonderful variety of night clubs, bars and pubs. There is always something on offer and there is always a reason to celebrate. Johannesburg, particularly, is known for its vibrant nightlife and you will find an endless variety of talent and interesting locales in this massive South African city. Yet the sun doesn’t set in Johannesburg with quite the same warmth as Port Elizabeth, the same bohemian atmosphere as in Durban and the same posh flair as Cape Town. Each city is different in its own right and you simply have to experience them all to get a true sense of what the South African nightlife is all about.
Perhaps the most logical place to start an evening celebration is one of the countless 'Action Bars' that you'll find in most city centers and suburbs. There's no need to be put off by the title, as the most action found inside generally occurs within the confines of a massive television set. Sports from around the world is screened in these cheery bars where alcohol is served freely and darts and pool provide more entertainment. The atmosphere gets particularly enjoyable whenever South Africa is involved in a massive sporting event and supporters flock to these bars to enjoy the fellowship of other sports lovers. If that leaves you wanting something a bit more lively, there are plenty of raves and night clubs in the major cities where you can ‘jol’ the night away. So pack in your favorite clubbing clothes and get ready to visit some great bars and clubs in South Africa!
