George Airport
Situated halfway between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, is the picturesque town of George. Due to George being on the Garden Route, and seeing a steady influx of tourists and visitors wanting to experience the breathtaking mountains, beaches and forests, the region has grown at a tremendous rate.
Even though the George Airport is relatively small, it is just as busy and any other. The George Airport was built as an exact replica of the Keetmanshoop Airport in Namibia, and officially opened in 1977. This airport sees more than 250 000 passengers pass through their terminals each year, and as the tourism in the area increases, so does the passenger volume. Not only do passengers pass through this airport, but it is an important role player in the area's economy, as it distributes various cargoes such as flowers, seafood and many other products.
The Airport in George has two runways. The main runway to George Airport is 2000m in length, and is 45m wide, and is fully lit. The secondary runway is 610m of tarred runway and 610m of grass, that totals to a runway of 1 220m in length. Runways 11 and 29 have an instrument landing system available, and the George Airport also has a category seven fire and rescue service on hand.
The George Airport underwent a 2 million rand revamp in 2002, as there was an increase in flights and passengers in the previous years, and well in time for the Presidents Cup Golf Championships which was held in George. During this period, thousands of travelers flocked to this town and George Airport saw the growth of arrivals from 12 436 to 20 193, during this golfing frenzy, which held was in November 2003.
