Bloemfontein/JBM Hertzog Airport
The third largest national airport, the Bloemfontein Airport is extremely important for the accessibility of the Free State Province, which sees mostly business travelers. Therefore, the Airport in Bloemfontein (also known as the JBM Hertzog Airport), is conveniently situated 10km from the city center.
Bloemfontein Airport boasts with excellent passenger facilities, such as VIP and executive lounges, restaurants, car hire, shops and information kiosks. There is also a conferencing facility available through the Airport Manager Secretary, which can seat 20 people. Parking bays are available in three selections: underground, lock-up garages and open parking bays, with ample security for your piece of mind.
The Bloemfontein Airport saw 255 636 passengers in the year 2004 make use of their hospitality, which was an 4.7 increase from 2003. The Airport in Bloemfontein has two runways at 2 559m and 2 195m respectively, and currently handle flights from South African Airways, South African Airlink, Nationwide Airlines, South African Express and One Time Airlines. There are daily flights between Bloemfontein Airport and Kimberley, Upington, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Bloemfontein Airport also shares it’s runways with the Bloemspruit Air Force Base, which is located to the south-east of the runway intersection. The Air Force Base shares a symbiotic relationship with the Bloemfontein Airport, as the airport is civilian, and shares not only its runways, but it’s approach aids and communication systems. The Air Forces Base also makes use of the Bloemfontein Airport's fire service and equipment, and pays landing fees to the airport.
In 2004 the Bloemfontein Airport was again called upon to share its grounds, only this time it was a request from a four legged friend. The Airports Company of South Africa has been in close association with the Endangered Wildlife Trust, as the birds that live on and around the runways, not only pose a threat to themselves, but to the aircrafts. The Endangered Wildlife Trust established the Border Collie Programme, training the dogs to chase the birds to safer grounds. Bloemfontein Airport was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the airports, to have the trails done on their runways.
